The Lao-Japan Human Resource Cooperation Centre (LJC), located at the National University of Laos, held a workshop on Wednesday to announce the availability of new scholarships for students to study in Japan .

LJC expert Ms Chinami Hanazono said in the past the centre had organised seminars in conjunction with the Embassy of Japan to Laos, such as the Explanatory Seminar and Pre-explanation of the Monbusho Scholarship (a Japanese government scholarship), to let Lao students know about education opportunities in Japan.

Ms Hanazono said this was the first time the centre had introduced private scholarships, as well as full-fee places, at Japanese education institutions.

“It is very useful for students to understand the advantages of studying in Japan , so we have invited officials from the Japan Student Service Organisation (JASSO) from Bangkok , Thailand , and Japanese lecturers from Senshu University in Japan ,” she said.

Ms Hanazono said the new programme would allow students who are not eligible for government scholarships to have an opportunity to study on private scholarships on both a short and long term basis.

“The workshops are very important to give Lao students useful information before they make a decision to study in Japan ,” said a JASSO official, Ms Kenpirom Yodwong.

Ms Kenpirom said students would focus on Japanese language, culture and society and the quality of education on offer made Japan an attractive destination.

Japan could help strengthen the human resource capacity of Laos , she said.
